Robert McNamara, general supervisor of the Ford Division, believed that manufacturers had an ethical obligation to review safety issues, develop protective security hardware, and educate shoppers. The National Safety Forum, a two-day convention in 1955 with crash exams and bulletins of new security options on the 1956 automobiles, was Ford’s try to raise the profile of auto safety research and intrigue the general public. In 1957, Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory constructed a radically redesigned security car for a public tour sponsored by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, a contributor to the ACIR challenge.
Henry Ford improved the assembly line system by putting in the primary conveyorbelt-style meeting line in his Ford Motor Company plant in Highland Park, Michigan. Ford’s assembly course of helped to cut back costs and make automobiles more affordable.
